For years the cycle path of western Liguria was a story in pieces: a beautiful stretch between Ospedaletti and San Lorenzo al Mare, an extension towards Imperia, and then nothing under Capo Berta. Since 20 June 2026 that has changed. With the opening of the section between Imperia and Diano Marina, the Ciclovia Tirrenica "Riviera dei Fiori" is connected from one end to the other: 45 kilometers from Ospedaletti to Andora, almost always with the sea beside you.

It runs through Ospedaletti, Sanremo, San Lorenzo al Mare, Imperia, Diano Marina, San Bartolomeo al Mare, Cervo and Andora. It is the Ligurian stretch of the Ciclovia Tirrenica, the project of about 1,200 kilometers meant to link the French border with Rome.

The sections, from west to east

Ospedaletti – San Lorenzo al Mare, 24 km. The historic section, the one of the Coastal Park. It follows the route of the Genoa-Ventimiglia railway, which until 2001 ran along the sea on a single track: that is why it is flat, away from cars and goes through the old railway tunnels. It crosses Sanremo and passes below Bussana.

San Lorenzo al Mare – Imperia (Borgo Prino), 9 km. The extension eastwards, still by the sea, as far as Borgo Prino in Imperia.

Imperia – Diano Marina, under Capo Berta. The section everyone called "l'Incompiuta" (the unfinished one) for decades: the road clinging to the cliffs above the sea, closed and reopened several times because of the unstable slope. After the safety works it was inaugurated on 20 June 2026 and is open to walkers and cyclists.

Diano Marina – Andora, about 7 km. The Golfo Dianese section, opened in spring 2026 on the former railway bed. It passes through San Bartolomeo al Mare, near the Roman mansio, and runs along below Cervo before reaching Andora.

Before you set off

  • You don't have to ride it all. Pick your sections: Sanremo and Bussana in an easy hour, Capo Berta for the views, the Golfo Dianese to ride to the foot of Cervo.
  • At the Argentina river, in Arma di Taggia, the new bridge of the cycle path is not finished yet: it is the last piece before the work can be called complete, so follow the signs on site there.
  • Works continue under Capo Berta. The Region has allocated another 10 million euros for 2026-2028 to consolidate the retaining wall and protect the section from the sea. In the past this stretch has been closed several times for safety: after a storm surge, check that it is open.
  • Water and facilities: don't count on drinking fountains and toilets every kilometer. Set off with water, especially in summer.
  • You share it with walkers. It is a path for both cyclists and pedestrians: in the town centres, in Sanremo and Diano Marina, take it slowly.

Out by bike, back by train

The cycle path runs alongside the Genoa-Ventimiglia line, so you don't have to cover the same ground twice: ride in one direction and come back by train. Sanremo, Taggia-Arma, Imperia, Diano Marina and Andora all have a station.

In Liguria bikes travel free on the regional trains run for the Region and marked with the bicycle pictogram, within the regional borders. Before boarding you need to go to the on-board staff, who issue the free supplement. These are the conditions published by Trenitalia for Liguria: check them again before you travel.

With children

The sections on the former railway are flat and traffic-free, which makes them the easiest part for a family: the Sanremo stretch is described in Sanremo with kids. With small children it is better to choose a short section and stop at the beach rather than chase kilometers.
