The Liguria Trail is the official hiking route that crosses the entire region from west to east (or vice versa), promoted by Regione Liguria through the portal beactiveliguria.it. This guide collects verified data stage by stage, cross-referencing the official route with the hiking reports from OpenStreetMap.

Verified data

  • Number of stages found and verified: 29 out of 30 (numbering 0-29)
  • Missing stage: Stage 17 β€” intentional absence: it is an urban crossing in Savona, between Albisola and Vado, covered by public transport rather than a dedicated walking section
  • Total verified km (only main stages): 464.2 km β€” an honestly partial figure: the variants of some stages (see below) are not summed because they are alternative routes, not additional sections, so the official total of ~670 km cannot be reliably reconstructed from OpenStreetMap tags alone
  • Source: official route from Regione Liguria (beactiveliguria.it), verified via the route=hiking reports from OpenStreetMap
  • Last verification: 2026-07-24

Note on variants

Several stages (3, 5, 8, 12, 13, 22, 27) have alternative routes (β€œvariants”) verified on OpenStreetMap for the same section, not additional sequential sections: an end-to-end hike chooses one or the other at each junction. For this reason, we only publish the main numbered route of each stage here, not the variants.

Before you go

  • No recent survey date reported by the OSM source for most stages: landslides, sea storms, and temporary closures should always be checked on beactiveliguria.it or with the relevant municipality before setting out, regardless of what is reported here.
  • Travel times: not reported by the OSM source for most stages; plan based on elevation gain and your average pace.
  • Stage 0 (Luni-Bocca di Magra): a note from the OSM source indicates that the report combines both the route published on beactiveliguria.it and that of the Geoportal of Regione Liguria β€” check on-site which one is actually marked.

How to tackle it in practice

You do not have to walk it all. It is a long-distance route, but the stages are designed to link places served by the coastal railway: many can be done singly in a day, arriving by train and coming back by train from the other end. It is the simplest way to try it without organising a trip of several weeks.

Costs. The trail is freely accessible and there is no ticket; the real expense is transport and any overnight stays.

Best time. Spring and autumn are the most suitable seasons: many stages climb inland on exposed slopes, and in high summer the middle hours are heavy going. In winter the main problem is the few hours of daylight on the longer stages.

Accessibility. It is a hiking route on natural ground with some considerable height gain: it cannot be walked with pushchairs or wheelchairs.

If it rains. The inland stretches become slippery and some stream crossings can become awkward: in bad weather it is better to postpone the stage.

To check before you leave: the up-to-date state of the individual stretches on the project's official portal (beactiveliguria.it), which reports closures and variants; train times for the return, especially in the evening and on public holidays; the availability of water along the stage you have chosen, which on several stretches is not guaranteed.
