This is the page to keep close at hand during your stay in Genoa: not what to see, but who to turn to when you need something. Every detail comes from an official source: the City, the ASL 3 health authority, the hospitals, the transport company and the waste company.
Tourist offices (IAT)
The City runs four tourist information offices:
- IAT Garibaldi, via Garibaldi 12r, open every day from 9 am to 6.20 pm;
- IAT Porto Antico, at Ponte Spinola near the Aquarium, every day from 10 am to 5 pm;
- IAT Stazione Marittima, at Ponte dei Mille, open when cruise ships arrive;
- IAT Airport, in the arrivals hall, in line with flight arrivals.
The single number is 010 5572903, email info@visitgenoa.it. Opening hours are shorter on 25 December and 1 January.
Emergencies
For any medical, police or rescue emergency the number is 112.
Out-of-hours doctor
The continuità assistenziale, ASL 3's out-of-hours medical service, answers on the free number 800 893 580. It runs:
- Monday to Friday, from 8 pm to 8 am the next day;
- Saturdays, Sundays, the day before a holiday and holidays, 24 hours a day.
Non-residents of Liguria pay ASL a fee of 25 euros for the visit.
Emergency departments
The city has three large hospitals with emergency departments, open day and night:
- Ospedale Galliera, the closest to the centre: the emergency entrance is at Mura del Prato 6, building A;
- Policlinico San Martino, largo Rosanna Benzi 10: the emergency department is in the DEA building, entrance from via Francesco Mosso;
- Istituto Gaslini, the children's hospital, via Gerolamo Gaslini 5 in Quarto: paediatric emergency department in the DEA building, tel. 010 5636 2414.
Pharmacies
Genoa's pharmacies take turns to open in the evening, at night and on holidays. The weekly rota is published by ASL 3 on its "Turni delle farmacie" page, with data from the Order of Pharmacists; to find the nearest open pharmacy there is also the Federfarma Genova search. Every pharmacy displays the rota on its door.
Taxis
Cooperativa Radio Taxi Genova answers on 010 5966. You can also call a taxi by text message to 392 5966123 or with the Your Taxi app, which lets you book and pay for the ride.
Rubbish: how to sort it
Collection is run by AMIU. In most of the city you use street bins, each with its own colour:
- yellow for plastic and metal;
- brown for food waste, only in compostable or paper bags; where there is none, food waste goes in the general bin;
- white for paper and cardboard, turning blue;
- green for general waste, turning grey.
The bins are changing colour district by district, and some areas have door-to-door collection, so it is worth asking your host how it works where you are staying. To find out where something goes there is the "Dove lo butto?" search on the AMIU website and the AMYOU app. The call centre answers on 800 957 700 from a landline and 010 8980800 from a mobile.
Tickets for buses, metro and lifts
With AMT a single ticket is valid on buses, the metro, lifts and funiculars:
- standard 110-minute ticket, 2 euros, across the whole network;
- AMT-Trenitalia integrated ticket, 2.20 euros, also valid on trains within Genoa;
- lifts and Sant'Anna funicular ticket, 1.20 euros for one ride;
- 4-ride carnet, 4 euros, for lifts, the Sant'Anna funicular and outlying lines;
- 5-hour ticket, 5 euros.
At the main stops there are totems where you pay with a contactless card or a smartphone. How to use the metro, funiculars and lifts is explained in the dedicated guide, linked below.
