In 2006 the Strade Nuove and the system of the Palazzi dei Rolli — 42 palaces in the heart of Genoa — were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. 2026 is the twentieth anniversary, and the city is marking it with a programme of events spread across all twelve months. The chosen theme is "condividere è proteggere", sharing is protecting: the idea that making heritage accessible and part of everyday life keeps it alive more effectively than conservation alone. The Rolli were the lists of private palaces that the Republic of Genoa drew by lot to host visiting heads of state — a system of public hospitality entrusted to private houses, unique in Europe, and it is this that UNESCO recognised. The programme is updated through the year: check dates, venues and access arrangements on the official site of Genoa's UNESCO listing.
