Finale Ligure is one of the best-known mountain bike destinations in Europe, and in October 2026 it hosted the UCI Enduro and E-Enduro World Championships. For first-timers, though, the starting point is simpler than it looks: there are no lifts to buy and no entry tickets. This guide explains how it works, where to book services and which trails to start with.
First things first: it is not a bike park
The consortium says so itself: the Finale area is not a bike park. The trails cross a very large area and anyone can ride them freely. The network was born more than thirty years ago, when the first riders from outside, the "foresti", and the locals used to meet up on the plateaus; at the end of the 1990s the first trail builders started working inland.
Today it is organised by the Finale Outdoor Region (FOR), the consortium for tourism promotion and protection of the Finale area. The Finale network alone has about 120 trails, from the woods at 1,000 metres down to the sea; across the whole Region there are more than 250 mountain bike trails. Maintenance is paid for by the FOR You Card, the riders' card that earns points and discounts at partner shops and services, and by donations: for every 10 euros donated the consortium records one metre of trail maintained.
The Finale Outdoor Base
This is the consortium's information point, and the first place to go: via per Gorra 10, Finalborgo, 1.7 kilometres from the station. According to the town's tourist website it is open every day from 8.30am to 12pm and from 3.30pm to 6pm. You can ask for information and book shuttles, guides and experiences there. Shuttles, uplifts and guides
The classic way to ride Finale is to go up in a van and come down on the bike. The Region's operators offer:
- van shuttle tours on the most classic trails of Finale Ligure and Pietra Ligure;
- single uplifts to about 1,000 metres;
- guided tours, including multi-day ones, and outings to the less-ridden trails of Bardineto, Osiglia and Mallare.
You can also pedal on your own: many climbs follow dirt roads away from traffic.
E-bikes
With an e-MTB things change: the consortium lists more than 50 recommended climbing routes, and Finale's many rental shops all have e-bikes. One example is Manie Uphill, the intermediate climb to the Manie plateau: a surviving stretch of the old municipal road from the sea up to the plateau.
Before you set off: is the trail open?
Trails close for work, races or bad weather, and their status changes. The consortium publishes in real time how many trails are open; we read it every six hours and show it on the Liguria MTB map and on each trail page, with the official FOR number. A quick look before loading the bike saves a wasted climb.
Where to start, by level
Grades are those of the official Finale Outdoor Region map; the number is the one on the signposts.
Easy to intermediate: getting your bearings
- Ponti Romani, no. 2, cross country: it stays wide, with pleasant gradients and a surface that holds even when wet. Downhill it links Le Manie to Finale.
- Cucco, no. 53, intermediate all mountain on the San Bernardino plateau. It is two-way: you will meet riders climbing.
Intermediate: the Finale flow
- Madre Natura, no. 94, in the Base Nato area: berms, rollers and roots, more accessible than its neighbours.
- Rollercoaster, no. 170, in the Melogno area: long and fast, pure flow, between intermediate and difficult. Pace yourself.
Difficult: real enduro
- Base Nato, no. 92: fast, with small jumps, berms and a few rock gardens. For many it is the way to understand the local style.
- Briga Destra, no. 10: one of the first trails ridden by mountain bike in Finale, with technical rocky sections. Races have been held here since 2009.
- DH Uomini, no. 6: the legend of the Finale area, from the Manie towards Varigotti. It is between difficult and very difficult, and the consortium recommends riding it with a guide.
Events
- The 24h of Finale Ligure, on the Manie plateau, is one of the most important mountain bike endurance races in the world: riders go day and night, with a village, concerts and a campsite.
- From 16 to 18 October 2026 Finale hosted the UCI Mountain Bike Enduro & E-Enduro World Championships, with the Expo Village in piazza Vittorio Emanuele II and on the lungomare Migliorini.
Not just bikes
The crags of Pietra di Finale have about 3,800 climbing routes on some 200 walls, from 10 to 250 metres high. After the ride, Finalborgo is where riders meet in the evening; with half a day free, our guide What to see in Finalborgo covers the museum and the castles, and the sea is twenty minutes' walk away.
