Finale Ligure: a guide to Finalborgo, Finalmarina, Finalpia and Varigotti

One town, four places: Finalborgo inside its walls, Finalmarina with the station and the seafront, Finalpia with its abbey, and Varigotti on the sea. How they fit together, what to see with real opening hours, and why you hardly need a car here.

Finale Ligure is a single municipality, but visitors find four different places. Finalmarina is the seafront part with the station, the promenade and the basilica. Finalpia is the district to the east that grew up around the Benedictine abbey. Finalborgo is the walled town a kilometre and a half inland, listed among the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy. Varigotti, six kilometres further east, is a fishing village with colourful houses on the beach. Getting this geography straight is the first thing to do, because it decides where to stay, where to park and how to plan your days.

The distances that matter

We measured them on the OpenStreetMap street network, on foot:

From To Distance On foot
Station Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II (the arch) 600 m 8 minutes
Station Castelfranco 1 km 13 minutes
Station Porta Testa, Finalborgo 1.5 km 20 minutes
Station Finalpia Abbey 1.6 km 20 minutes
Station Varigotti, piazza Lagorio 5.9 km 1 hour 20

Finalmarina, Finalpia and Finalborgo form a triangle you can cover on foot. For Varigotti, take bus line 40 or a bike, or walk along the sea if you want the walk for its own sake.

Finalborgo: the town of the Del Carretto

Finalborgo is the reason many people come to Finale outside the beach season. The walls date from around 1447, built by Giovanni I del Carretto, and the Del Carretto marquises held Finale until 1602, when it passed to Spain. Inside the gates are the Santa Caterina complex, with its two 15th-century cloisters and the Archaeological Museum of Finale, the basilica of San Biagio and the small Teatro Aycardi, built between 1804 and 1806: according to the museum it is the oldest 19th-century theatre with stalls and boxes surviving in Liguria.

The museum is the anchor of the town. According to its website it is open Tuesday to Sunday: in winter (15 September to 14 June) from 9am to 12pm and 2.30pm to 5pm, in summer from 10am to 1pm and 4pm to 7pm. It is closed on Mondays. A full ticket costs 5 euros, a reduced one 3, and a family ticket is 10 euros for two adults with at least one child under 12. This is where you see the "Young Prince", the Palaeolithic burial found in 1942 in the Arene Candide cave.

Two castles stand above the town. Castel San Giovanni, the Spanish fortress built in 1642–1643, is about 600 metres uphill from Porta Testa. Castel Gavone, with its Diamond Tower, can be visited only on a guided tour booked through the museum's number, +39 019 690020. Details are in our guide What to see in Finalborgo.

Finalmarina and Finalpia: the sea and the promenade

Finalmarina has its centre on the sea, with the basilica of San Giovanni Battista, one of the most important 17th-century churches of the western Riviera, and the arch of Margaret of Spain from 1666 in piazza Vittorio Emanuele II. On the headland between Finalmarina and Finalpia stands Castelfranco, the fortress Genoa built around 1365 to keep the Del Carretto in check.

The promenade carries on east: it passes below the Castelletto, reaches Capo San Donato with the marina and the mausoleum of General Enrico Caviglia, and continues all the way to Varigotti.

The local farmers' market is held in Finalmarina: from 16 June to 14 September on the lungomare Migliorini on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4pm to 7.30pm and on Saturdays from 10am to 7pm; for the rest of the year in piazza Vittorio Emanuele II on Wednesdays from 3pm to 7.30pm and Saturdays from 10am to 7pm. From June to September Varigotti has its own, on Friday afternoons on the seafront.

The beaches

The town's coastline is about eight kilometres long, and in 2026 Finale Ligure holds the Blue Flag for six stretches: Castelletto San Donato, Varigotti, Spiaggia del Porto, Finalpia, Finalmarina and Malpasso. There are three equipped free beaches (Ponente near the station, 20Riviera in Varigotti and Malpasso), all with boardwalks and special chairs to get into the water for people with reduced mobility. Everything else, including the Baia dei Saraceni, is in our guide Beaches of Finale Ligure.

Varigotti

Varigotti belongs to the municipality but has an identity of its own: the village of low, colourful houses sits right on the beach, the Baia dei Saraceni is a kilometre's walk from piazza Lagorio, and above the village the Manie plateau drops sheer into the sea. For Varigotti together with Noli, see our itinerary between Noli and Varigotti.

Mountain biking and climbing

For outdoor sports, Finale is an international name. The Finale Outdoor Region network has hundreds of mountain bike trails, and in October 2026 Finale hosted the UCI Enduro and E-Enduro World Championships. It is not a bike park: the trails are open and free to ride. The crags of Pietra di Finale, the pinkish-white limestone of the plateau, have about 3,800 climbing routes.

First-timers will find in our guide Mountain biking in Finale Ligure how shuttles, rentals and grades work, and which trails to start with. Whether each MTB trail is open or closed is shown on our Liguria MTB map, updated every six hours.
