Varazze has held the Blue Flag for more than twenty years, and its sea has two sides. In town there is the long, equipped beach, ten minutes' walk from the station. To the east, along the Lungomare Europa towards Cogoleto, the coast turns wild, with cliffs and coves. The town sums up the figures like this: about 2 kilometres of coast in town and 4.5 kilometres of Lungomare Europa.
The 2026 Blue Flags
In 2026 three Varazze beaches are awarded:
- Levante Teiro
- Ponente Teiro
- Arrestra
The first two take their name from the Teiro, the stream that crosses the town: they are the beaches on either side of its mouth, in the heart of Varazze. Arrestra is further east, towards Cogoleto, where the coast begins to change. The Marina di Varazze, the marina, has also held the Blue Flag for 17 years.
The town beach
This is the one in front of the centre, on either side of the mouth of the Teiro: pale sand, mixed with gravel in places, beach clubs side by side and several free and equipped free beaches in between. From the station to the marina is 800 metres, ten minutes on foot, so it is the easiest choice if you arrive by train.
One detail that matters in Varazze: according to the town some beach clubs stay open in winter, for sitting in the sun on mild days.
The coves of the Lungomare Europa
Leaving town to the east, you join the Lungomare Europa, the walk along the old railway. From there paths lead down to small rocky, pebbly beaches, quieter and with clear water, popular for snorkelling too. These are natural beaches with no facilities: you need proper shoes, water with you and care when the sea is rough. The full route is in our guide Varazze and the Lungomare Europa.
Surfing
Varazze is one of the best-known surf spots in the Mediterranean. In 2015 Surfline included it among the ten best surf destinations in Europe, and the town's tourist website quotes Tuttologic Surf calling it the most scenic wave in the Mediterranean. The wave builds with the right swells, so the good surf days are often stormy ones, in winter too, rather than beach days. If you don't surf, you can watch from the promenade.
The open sea
Off Varazze lies the Pelagos Sanctuary, the protected sea where whales, sperm whales and dolphins swim. Every year trips with marine biologists leave from here. Boat trips and other water activities also start from the marina.
Which beach to choose
| If you want | Go to |

Driving to the beach
In summer parking near the sea is mostly paid and fills up early. The town lists two free areas: the harbour zone and the large piazzale Carlo Alberto Dalla Chiesa. All the details are in our guide Getting to Varazze and where to park.
