The Route
The name "Strada dei Santuari" recalls the historical function of this itinerary: connecting the Marian sanctuaries built on the ridges above the villages of the Cinque Terre (such as the Sanctuary of Nostra Signora di Reggio and the Sanctuary of Nostra Signora della Salute di Volastra), once reached on foot by pilgrims and residents of the coastal villages. The path runs along the coast, with views of the sea alternating with stretches inland among woods and terraced vineyards.
Being a long-distance T (tourist) path, it is a good alternative for those seeking a day hike away from the crowds of more famous coastal trails (like the Via dell'Amore), while still remaining in the heart of the Cinque Terre National Park.
Before You Go
- Check conditions with CAI La Spezia: the inspection date reported by the REL/CAI source dates back to 2015. Landslides and temporary closures should always be checked with CAI La Spezia before departing, regardless of the trail classification.
- Water and supplies: being a nearly 10 km route away from the villages, bring adequate supplies; replenishment points are only at the start (Telegrafo) and end (Volastra) of the route.
- REL Signage: the trail is marked with the REL numbering (530) on signs along the path.
