Levanto is the "quiet" gateway to the Cinque Terre, and it holds one of the loveliest easy routes in Liguria: the Maremonti cycle path, built on the old coastal railway that links Levanto to Bonassola and Framura between tunnels and windows onto the sea.
The Maremonti cycle path
The route is flat, sheltered and largely runs through lit tunnels, with sudden openings that frame the sea: a few kilometres suitable for everyone, on foot, by bike or on skates. The tunnels stay cool even in high summer — an advantage in the hottest hours. In Levanto and along the route there are bike hire points; on summer weekends the path is busy, so the early hours are better.
The coves along the route
From the windows in the tunnels and from the descents you reach rocky coves with very clear water, an alternative to the main beaches: natural and without facilities, to be enjoyed when the sea is calm.
Levanto and Bonassola
Levanto deserves time of its own: the long beach loved by surfers, the centre with its medieval loggia and the church of Sant'Andrea, the olive groves inland. Bonassola is more intimate, with its quiet bay and its promenade; Framura is a set of scattered hamlets high above the sea, the most secret of the three.
How to organise it
All three towns have a station on the Genoa–La Spezia line: you can set off from Levanto and come back by train from Framura, or the other way round, building a loop without a car. The classic combination: the cycle path in the morning, a swim in a cove, lunch in Bonassola and an unhurried return.
