Soggiorna
A few kilometres from the coast between Borghetto Santo Spirito and Loano, the Toirano Caves are the most famous underground complex in Liguria: a route through halls of stalactites and stalagmites that also holds traces of prehistoric presence.
Visiting the caves
The route runs between the Bàsura cave and the Santa Lucia Inferiore cave, with concretion-filled chambers, small lakes and spectacular formations. The visit is guided and lasts roughly an hour or more; the temperature inside stays cool and constant all year, so a sweatshirt is needed even in high summer. Tour times and tickets should be checked on the official website before you go, especially in high season.
The prehistoric traces
The Bàsura is known for the evidence left by humans and cave bears in prehistoric times: something that makes the visit interesting for school-age children too, turning it into a small journey through time.
The village of Toirano
On the way out it is worth going down into the village: a medieval bridge, carruggi, the ethnographic museum of the Val Varatella and oil mills that tell the story of the olive oil tradition. A few minutes away, Borghetto Santo Spirito is the base on the coast, with a railway station and beaches.
How to organise it
The car is the most convenient option: the caves have their own car park. Without a car, you arrive by train at Borghetto Santo Spirito or Loano and continue by bus or taxi, checking the times of the local connections. The classic combination is caves in the morning and the sea in the afternoon.
