Trail 509 is the old mule track that climbs from Monterosso to the sanctuary of Santa Maria di Soviore: 2.5 kilometres and almost 470 metres of ascent, an hour and three quarters uphill according to the National Park.
It leaves the Sentiero Azzurro near the Torre Aurora, follows Via Roma and takes the old stairway up the ridge between terraces of olive trees and lemon gardens. In places the original path has been replaced by farm roads, some of them concreted; it gets its old character back where it crosses the road.
There stands a small altar with a wrought-iron cross, a reminder of the Good Friday procession, of which a few Stations of the Cross shrines survive. The path passes the Cappella del Ritrovamento and reaches the sanctuary, where there is a fountain, a few services and the remains of the original church.
