The route

This is the "historic" crossing of the Portofino Promontory, which traverses the protected area of the Portofino Park from one end to the other. The route passes through San Rocco di Camogli, the Passo del Bacio, and descends to the Abbey of San Fruttuoso, before climbing back up towards Portofino.

Want a shorter route? If you are looking for just the most famous stretch — Camogli/San Rocco to San Fruttuoso, without continuing to Portofino — see the dedicated guide: Camogli - San Fruttuoso (via Pietre Strette), a 5.72 km route with confirmed elevation gain and time data from the Portofino Park Authority. The longer route described here can be shortened by stopping at San Fruttuoso, which is also reachable by boat for the return.

Before you go

  • Full day: with over 11 km and significant elevation gain (even if not precisely quantified by the source), plan for a full day, not just a few hours of walking.
  • Return: from Portofino you can return to Camogli by boat (seasonal) or retrace the trail.
  • San Fruttuoso halfway: is a good resting point with refreshments, and also an alternative exit point by boat if conditions change.
