Sestri Levante is known as the town of two seas because the historic center develops between Baia del Silenzio and Baia delle Favole. It is a destination suitable for both a day trip by train and a longer stay, thanks to the combination of beaches, the village, walks, and trails.
Baia del Silenzio
Baia del Silenzio is the most photographed spot. Colorful houses and boats surround a small sandy cove. Due to its small size, it can become very crowded.
To visit it respectfully:
- arrive early;
- do not block access and pathways;
- check local rules;
- do not leave waste;
- avoid loud music;
- check for any seasonal restrictions.
The bay should not be presented as always empty or always swimmable: conditions and rules change.
Baia delle Favole
Baia delle Favole opens on the opposite side of the promontory and offers a wider promenade. The name is linked to Hans Christian Andersen, an important figure in the city’s cultural identity.
This area can be used for walking, reaching establishments, and observing a different part of the waterfront.
The historic center
Between the two bays, there are pedestrian streets, shops, buildings with painted facades, and slate portals. The center is compact and can be easily explored on foot.
Do not focus only on the beaches: the painted architectures and maritime culture help to understand Sestri Levante beyond the most famous images.
The peninsula and San Nicolò
The promontory separates the two bays. As you climb, you will encounter viewpoints and historic buildings, including the church of San Nicolò.
The path includes an ascent and should be tackled with appropriate footwear. Access and opening times should be checked.
Punta Manara
Punta Manara is one of the most well-known hikes in the area. The trail goes through Mediterranean vegetation and offers sea views.
Before you set off, check:
- the length of the chosen route;
- elevation gain;
- trail conditions;
- temperature;
- available water;
- sunset time;
- any closures.
Do not attempt it with beach footwear and do not stray from the paths.
Riva Trigoso
Riva Trigoso is a coastal hamlet with a beach and maritime tradition. It can become an additional stop for a multi-day stay.
Do not automatically include it in a short visit: it requires travel and deserves its own time.
Arriving by train
The Sestri Levante station is close to the center. The train is therefore a practical solution for those coming from Genoa, Tigullio, or the Cinque Terre.

Arriving by car
In summer, parking and traffic can be challenging. Before you leave, look for an authorized area and do not head directly to Baia del Silenzio.
